How to Clean a Pendant Without Damaging Its Finish

A pendant can collect a film on its back while the front still looks bright. You do not need to soak the whole necklace to deal with every small mark.
Check the back as well as the front
The back sits against skin or clothing. The loop at the top rubs against the chain. The setting can collect residue in small gaps. Look at each area in daylight before deciding what needs attention.
Use a small, controlled approach
Work over a tray. If the maker allows a soft-cloth wipe, support the pendant in one hand and use light pressure with a clean, non-abrasive cloth. Do not pull it by the chain while rubbing.
If damp cleaning is specifically allowed, follow the stated method and drying advice. Do not leave it submerged while you do something else. An instruction for one stone or metal does not automatically cover the whole assembled piece.
The GIA care guide explains that jewellery materials have different responses to cleaning.
Unknown stones, coatings and construction deserve a pause rather than an all-purpose solution.
What if dirt remains around the stone?
Do not dig it out with a pin or scrape it with a blade. Ask the seller what tool and product they recommend for that setting. If a stone moves, stop cleaning and get it checked before wearing it again.
You can send a close photo and say: “The residue is here, around the setting. What method is safe for this pendant's plating and stones?” That is more useful than asking only how to make it shiny.
What should you skip?
Skip toothpaste, rough brushes, jewellery dips and ultrasonic cleaning unless the maker specifically approves the method for this piece. A dramatic before-and-after video does not show what happens to a thin finish after repeated cleaning.
Finish with a dry storage check
Let the piece dry as instructed before it goes into its pouch. Store the chain and pendant so they do not rub against other pieces. Keep the care instructions where you can find them again.
If the problem is a different colour at the edge, cleaning may not be the answer. Use the tarnish and plating check. If the chain needs separate attention, read how to clean a plated chain.
