How to Read Jewellery Product Photos Before You Buy

The Enchanted Blue Heart Pendant Necklace — Aagrah product photographAnother view of The Enchanted Blue Heart Pendant Necklace — Aagrah product photograph

A pendant fills your phone screen. It looks substantial, but the listing later says it is less than two centimetres high. Neither view is automatically wrong. A close-up is designed to show detail, not life-size scale.

Quick answer: Use photos to inspect the design and ask questions. Use written dimensions and material specifications to make the purchase decision. A photo cannot prove the metal, coating thickness, stone identity or fit on your body.

Give each photo a job

View What to look for
Front Shape, arrangement of stones and symmetry of the design
Side Height of the setting, thickness and how much it projects
Back Construction, openings and the parts that may touch skin
Clasp or closure Closure type, extender and attachment points
On a person A rough idea of styling and proportion

If every image shows the same front angle, ask for the view that answers your missing question. “Could I see the back and clasp?” is more useful than “Is the quality good?”

Make the missing information visible
Compare the same details for both options. Leave an unknown blank until the seller answers; do not infer it from the price or photo.

Put the dimensions on a ruler

Find the pendant height and width, chain length or ring’s adjustable range. Mark those dimensions on paper with a ruler to get a simple sense of scale. The outline will not reproduce sparkle or depth, but it can stop a major size surprise.

For a pendant, check whether its height includes the loop at the top. For earrings, distinguish total drop from the decorative part. For a ring, the stone or motif width is separate from the size that fits the finger.

Be careful with colour comparisons

Lighting, reflections and your screen settings can change how a finish looks. A warm reflection can make a silver-coloured piece look warmer; a bright highlight can hide part of a gold finish.

Look for a written colour and finish description. If matching an existing piece matters, ask about the shade, while accepting that a screen cannot guarantee an exact match.

Do not diagnose materials from sparkle

A bright stone is not proof of a diamond, and a gold colour is not proof of solid gold. Check the named stone, base metal and finish. The materials guide helps decode coating labels, and the cubic zirconia guide explains a common stone option.

Customer photos can offer another view, but they do not independently verify the material either. Check that a review refers to the same design and variant.

A practical question list for the seller

Ask for the exact dimensions, a back or closure photo, the base metal, the finish and the stone name. For a gift, also ask what packaging is included and read the current policy for problems on arrival.

If a key answer remains missing, keep that uncertainty in the decision. You do not need to prove a listing is bad to decide it does not give you enough information.

For necklaces, our model-photo guide explains why the same length can sit differently on you. Let the photographs help you enjoy the design, then let the specifications help you choose it.
