Gold Plated vs PVD vs Vermeil: Read the Finish Before You Buy

Three listings promise a gold look. One says gold plated, one says PVD, and one says vermeil. You cannot rank them fairly from those labels alone because they describe different things.
Put the labels side by side
An “18K” label on plating describes the gold alloy in the layer, not the whole piece. It does not turn a plated steel ring into a solid 18K gold ring. Read what 18K gold plated means if that distinction is new to you.
Why PVD is not a material by itself
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. It is a way of applying coatings. Oerlikon Balzers’ decorative coating information describes a range of coating options, which is why the process name alone cannot tell you the exact substance on a particular necklace.
Ask: “What is the PVD coating made of, and is there a real gold layer?” A seller should explain the specific product rather than treating the three letters as a complete specification.
What does vermeil mean?
Under the US FTC jewellery guides, vermeil uses a sterling silver base and gold of at least 10 karat, with a minimum coating thickness equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold. That is a US definition, not an Indian hallmark or a claim that every listing using the word has been verified.
Which lasts longer?
There is no honest universal ranking from these labels alone. The actual coating, its preparation, the item’s design, friction and care all matter. A ring worn against handles and surfaces has different exposure from a pendant worn occasionally.
Ask what a durability claim is based on and what the warranty excludes. Be wary of a precise lifespan that ignores how the piece will be used.
Make a fair purchase comparison
Write down the base metal, coating, thickness if disclosed, stone, dimensions, care instructions and total price for each piece. Mark missing details as unknown rather than filling them in from the appearance.
If she wants a piece she can wear without removing for her usual activities, check that exact use with the seller. If she wants a particular design for occasional wear, the decision may be different.
Use the same-price comparison guide to weigh those trade-offs. A fuller specification helps you choose; an impressive label without details does not.
