What Does 18K Gold-Plated Jewellery Mean?

“18K gold-plated” means the item is described as having a surface layer of 18-karat gold alloy over another material. It does not mean the entire ring, chain or pendant is made from 18K gold. The two parts of the phrase answer different questions.
Quick answer
18K describes gold fineness: 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% gold by mass in that alloy. Gold-plated describes a surface layer over a different base. The phrase does not tell you the base metal, layer thickness, total gold weight or how long the finish will last.
Read the label in two parts
| Label part | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 18K | The stated gold fineness of the alloy described | The thickness of a coating |
| Gold-plated | Gold alloy is used as a surface layer | The composition of the core |
| Base metal, if listed | The material under the finish | Every detail of the coating system |
The FTC’s jewellery buying guide distinguishes gold-alloy jewellery from gold-plated items. Use the whole description rather than reading only the largest “18K” text.
A simple example
Imagine a listing that says “18K gold-plated stainless steel”. That description names a stainless-steel base and an 18K gold-alloy surface layer. It does not mean 75% of the whole item is gold.
Now imagine a listing that says only “18K gold-plated”. The surface description is present, but the base metal remains unknown. Ask for it before making assumptions about care or suitability.
These are explanatory examples, not specifications for every Aagrah product.
Separate colour, composition and performance
A gold colour in a photograph is an appearance. A stated karat value is a composition claim. A claim such as “waterproof” or “lasts for years” is a performance claim. One does not prove the others.
For example, the 18K label alone cannot tell you whether a piece is suitable for showering. You need the maker’s instructions and relevant evidence for the full construction. See anti-tarnish and waterproof claims.
Ask for the details that affect your decision
Before choosing, record:
- The base metal.
- The exact finish description.
- Any supplied coating specification.
- The stone or decorative material.
- Care instructions and written warranty scope.
If you have a known metal sensitivity, exact composition information matters. A plating label alone does not establish that the whole piece is suitable for you.
Compare related terms carefully
Gold-filled and gold-plated are different descriptions of how gold is applied and specified. Our gold-filled comparison explains the distinction and the limits of using overseas terminology as a buying shortcut in India.
For a current Aagrah shortlist, browse the 18K jewellery collection and verify the selected product’s wording. Do not assume every product has the same base metal or coating specification because it appears in one collection.
FAQs
Is the gold in gold plating real gold?
The description claims a real gold-alloy surface layer. That is different from claiming the whole piece is gold. The listing and any verification apply to the particular product.
Is 18K plating thicker than 14K plating?
The karat number describes fineness, not thickness. You need a separate thickness specification to compare that feature.
Does an 18K label guarantee no fading?
No. Read why plated jewellery can change colour and follow the product’s care guidance.
