Why Does Silver Jewellery Turn Black?

Your silver necklace has gone dark in its box. You have barely worn it. That feels frustrating, but a colour change does not automatically mean the silver is fake.

Quick answer: Silver can react with sulphur-containing substances in its surroundings and form tarnish. That surface layer can darken over time. Before cleaning it, confirm whether the piece is sterling silver, silver plated or another material with a silver colour.

Why can it happen in storage?

Air and materials around the piece can contribute to tarnish. The Canadian Conservation Institute explains silver tarnish and the role of the surrounding environment. Wearing it is not the only way its surface can change.

This also means two pieces stored in different places may age differently. Do not use one necklace staying bright as proof that another should behave identically.

Is black silver always fake?

No. Tarnish can occur on real silver. Equally, a black mark does not prove a piece is silver. You need the original material description or proper testing, not colour alone, to answer that question.

What you own Why cleaning advice differs
Sterling silver The body is a silver alloy; stones and surface treatments still matter
Silver-plated jewellery The silver is a thin outer layer over another material
Intentionally darkened silver Removing the dark areas may remove the intended design
Unknown silver-coloured piece Identify it before choosing a cleaner

Why not just polish harder?

Cleaning and polishing can remove some metal. That is especially important with a plated surface, where there is only a thin silver layer to begin with. Repeated vigorous rubbing may reveal the metal below rather than restore an even finish.

Use instructions for your exact piece. Do not apply a solid-silver cleaning recipe to a plated necklace with glued stones. If the construction is unclear, ask a jeweller first.

How can you slow it down?

After wear, follow the maker's cleaning advice and let the piece dry before storing it. Keep pieces separate in suitable storage rather than leaving them in a damp bathroom or a pile where they rub together.

An anti-tarnish storage product can be useful when it is appropriate for the material, but it does not make a piece maintenance free. Follow its instructions and keep it out of reach of children.

What should you tell the person receiving the gift?

Give her the care card with the gift. “This is how to look after the finish” is more helpful than promising it will never change. Keep the receipt and product details in case she needs service later.

For a plated item, read our silver-plated cleaning guide. If a patch has a different base colour rather than a dark film, check tarnish versus worn plating before cleaning further.
