Bangle Size vs Bracelet Size: Measure the Right Part of Your Hand

A bracelet that fits your wrist can be far too small if you use its size to buy a closed bangle. The difference is the way you put it on.

Quick answer: Measure the wrist for a bracelet that opens. For a rigid, closed bangle, account for the widest part of the hand it must pass over. Follow the seller’s sizing method, because bangle diameter and bracelet length are different measurements.

Which piece are you buying?

Design How it goes on Start with
Chain bracelet with a clasp Opens and closes around the wrist Wrist circumference and the seller’s fit allowance
Rigid closed bangle Slides over the hand A well-fitting bangle’s inner diameter or the seller’s hand-measurement method
Hinged bangle Opens at a hinge The maker’s internal dimensions and fit chart
Open cuff Goes on through an opening The maker’s opening, internal size and adjustment instructions

Do not bend a cuff or hinge to make it fit unless the maker says that design can be adjusted. “Open” does not automatically mean adjustable.

The easiest closed-bangle reference

Use a rigid bangle that already fits the same person well. Place it flat and measure straight across the inside, through the centre. Leave the metal thickness out of that measurement.

Measure in two directions. If the opening is oval, record both dimensions and tell the seller. One diameter cannot describe an oval accurately.

For a perfectly round opening, circumference equals diameter multiplied by pi. A 60 mm inner diameter gives about 188.5 mm around the inside. That calculation describes the bangle; it does not prove that it will pass comfortably over your hand.

If you do not have a bangle to compare

Use the seller’s illustrated method for measuring the hand. A common approach brings the thumb towards the little finger and measures around the widest part, but charts can use different inputs and allowances. Do not enter a hand measurement into a chart asking for wrist size.

If the chart is unclear, send the seller this question: “Is your size based on inner diameter, hand circumference or wrist circumference? Which measurement should I take for this exact design?”

Never force a tight bangle

A size that needs painful pressure is not a good fit. Do not use force to get a rigid piece over the hand. If a piece is stuck and there is pain, swelling, numbness or a colour change, seek medical help rather than continuing to pull.

Buying it as a gift

An existing well-fitting bangle is a stronger reference than a guessed wrist size. If you cannot get that measurement, consider a clasp bracelet with a confirmed adjustment range—provided she likes that style.

Use the bracelet measuring guide for an opening bracelet and our adjustable bracelet guide to check its range. Keep the packaging and read the seller’s policy before buying; do not assume a size mistake can be exchanged.
