16-Inch vs 18-Inch Necklace: Which Length Should You Choose?

Two inches sounds like a small difference. On a necklace, it can change whether the chain sits near a neckline or drops below it.
Start with the actual difference
These are exact unit conversions. They do not predict a fixed position on every body.
Why does “sits at the collarbone” not always work?
Neck circumference, body proportions and the pendant affect the way a chain falls.
Try both lengths with a soft cord before choosing. Mark 40.6 cm and 45.7 cm, place each around the neck without pulling it tight, and check the result with the intended neckline. Leave room for the pendant’s drop. This gives you a more useful comparison than expecting a model’s photo to show your exact fit.
A length chart showing one outline is an illustration, not a fitting guarantee.
If she prefers a looser feel, check that preference first. Do not buy a short chain simply because a styling guide calls it a standard length.
Compare with a real favourite
Measure a necklace she enjoys wearing. Note the clasp position and whether its pendant is removable. Then compare the new chain's range with that measurement.
If the new necklace has an extender, find out the shortest and longest usable lengths. An “18-inch necklace” might refer to the full extended length or the main chain; the seller should make that clear.
Which is easier to choose as a gift?
The better choice is the one closest to a length she already wears comfortably, with the right pendant scale. Neither 16 nor 18 inches is a universal gift size.
If you have no clue, ask about preferred length or choose together. A clearly described adjustable range can help, but it should still match her likely fit.
Test it with the outfit
If she is choosing for herself, try a tape loop or an existing chain with the neckline she plans to wear. Check the front, side and seated position. A pendant that keeps falling inside a collar may be annoying even if the standing photo looks good.
For more detail, use the necklace measuring steps and the neckline guide. If an otherwise loved necklace is just too short, read what to check in an extender before buying one.
