One guide says you should wear gold. Another says your veins mean silver is better. If those tests leave you more confused, start with the pieces you actually like seeing on yourself.

Quick answer: Try different metal colours in the same neutral light and with an outfit you wear often. Skin-tone categories can be styling prompts, but they do not decide what you are allowed to wear. Preference, contrast and the whole outfit matter.

Make a fair colour comparison

Hold two pieces near the same area of skin, in the same light. If possible, compare similar sizes and levels of shine. A large bright pendant and a tiny matte stud are not a clean colour comparison.

Compare Keep similar
Gold colour versus silver colour Size and amount of shine
Rose gold versus yellow gold Lighting and background
A photo versus the real item Be aware the screen may change colour

Look once with a plain top and once with a favourite outfit. You may prefer different finishes in different combinations, and that is fine.

Build around one detail you enjoy
A shared shape or finish can connect pieces. This is a styling option, not a rule about what you should wear.

What does undertone mean in styling advice?

It is a way people describe a perceived warm, cool or neutral cast to skin. It is not the same as how light or dark someone's skin is, and it is not a medical diagnosis.

Vein-colour and jewellery tests can be hard to interpret under different lights. Do not treat one home test as a permanent answer.

Try these questions instead

Which finish do you reach for most? Which works with the watch or earrings you already wear? Do you like a strong contrast, or a softer blend? Would you enjoy mixing tones?

Those questions lead to a usable choice rather than a label you must fit into.

Buying a gift for her?

Her current jewellery is a better clue than your guess about her undertone. If she wears silver-coloured pieces every day, do not buy gold to “correct” her palette. Ask whether she wants to try another finish.

Read gifts for someone who wears silver or gifts for a gold lover for practical choices.

Keep skin sensitivity separate

A colour that looks good says nothing about whether a material suits sensitive skin. Check the metal, coating and skin-contact parts independently. The nickel-free guide explains why finish colour is not an allergy guarantee.

You can choose more than one

There is no need to replace your jewellery box with one approved tone. Keep the pieces you enjoy and try combinations. Our mixed-metal guide gives simple ways to connect them through shape or scale.

The result should feel comfortable and like you. A chart is useful only when it helps you see an option, not when it talks you out of a favourite.
