When Should You Measure Ring Size? Get a More Useful Reading

You measure a finger in the morning, then again later, and get two different results. That does not mean you are bad at measuring. Fingers and measuring methods both vary.
Why not rely on one reading?
Your hand may be colder than usual when you first get up or warmer after a commute. A paper strip can also be pulled tighter on one attempt than another. Those are separate reasons for a result to move.
Cartier's sizing guidance takes finger variation and the intended hand into account. Use the seller's own size chart for the ring you plan to buy rather than treating all charts as identical.
Use a repeatable routine
- Choose the exact hand and finger where the ring will be worn.
- Let your hand settle after being hot, cold or active.
- Use the same measuring method and units each time.
- Record the result without rounding it to the size you hope to buy.
- Repeat at another normal time and compare.
Should you choose the largest result?
Not automatically. If one result came from a tightly pulled strip or a temporarily swollen finger, choosing a size from it may still be wrong. A ring must pass the knuckle and stay secure without painful pressure.
A wide band can also feel different from a narrow measuring strip. For an expensive or fixed-size ring, a fitting with suitable sizing tools is more useful than repeatedly guessing between two numbers.
What if the ring is a surprise?
An existing ring helps only if it fits the intended finger and hand. A thumb ring is not a useful substitute for a ring-finger measurement. Ask a trusted person for help only when it can be done without taking jewellery without permission.

When should you pause the purchase?
If there is new pain, swelling or an injury, resolve that before treating the measurement as a normal buying size. If the uncertainty is just the measurement, our ring-size calculator can help organise diameter and size information, but it cannot correct an inaccurate measurement for you.
