How to Measure Ring Size at Home in India

Measure in millimetres first and choose a size label second. That order helps you avoid a common mistake: taking a number from one brand’s chart and assuming it means exactly the same thing elsewhere. A home measurement is a useful estimate; the seller’s sizing guidance and a physical fitting help confirm it.

Quick answer

Measure the intended finger with a suitable measuring strip, or measure the inside diameter of a round ring that fits that same finger. Repeat the reading and compare it with the seller’s chart. If the readings disagree, the knuckle is difficult to fit or the ring is costly to resize, get a jeweller’s help before ordering.

Know the two measurements

Circumference is the distance around the finger or inside of a ring. Inside diameter is the straight distance across the empty centre of a round ring. Both can be written in millimetres, but they are not interchangeable.

For a circle, circumference equals diameter multiplied by π, approximately 3.1416. A 17.3 mm inside diameter gives a calculated circumference of about 54.35 mm. This calculation describes a circle; it does not account for how a particular ring feels on a finger.

Method 1: Measure the intended finger

Use a purpose-made ring sizer if you have one. Otherwise, use a narrow, non-stretch paper strip as an estimate:

  1. Wrap it where the ring will sit, without pressing into the skin.
  2. Mark the overlap with a fine line.
  3. Lay it flat and measure from the start to the mark in millimetres.
  4. Check that the intended ring size will pass over the knuckle comfortably.
  5. Repeat the measurement and record the readings.

Cartier’s measuring guidance also highlights the knuckle, differences between hands and the need to avoid measuring fingers when unusually hot or cold. Use normal conditions rather than measuring immediately after a situation that changes your hands’ size.

Method 2: Measure a ring you already wear

Choose a round ring that fits the intended finger and hand. Measure across the inside opening through the centre, excluding the metal band. Take another reading after turning the ring.

If the opening is oval, distorted or difficult to read accurately, stop and have it checked. See the existing-ring measurement guide for the complete method.

Turn the measurement into an order

Use the actual seller’s chart and product instructions. Our Indian ring-size chart guide shows a named retailer example and explains the limits of converting labels.

You can also open Aagrah’s ring-size calculator. Check which measurement and unit it asks for. A calculator organises the input; it cannot correct an inaccurate measurement or confirm an adjustable ring’s limits.

Keep a useful measurement note

Record the finger, hand, method, measurements and date. Add whether the reference ring is narrow or wide. If two readings differ noticeably, repeat them or seek a fitting rather than averaging away the uncertainty.

For a gift, the note is more useful than “she is probably a size 7”. Include the sizing system whenever you write a size number.

FAQs

Can I use thread?

Stretch and tension can make the reading hard to repeat. A purpose-made sizer or careful non-stretch strip is easier to compare, while a professional fitting can resolve uncertainty.

Should I automatically round up?

Follow the chosen seller’s advice for that design. A universal rounding rule may not suit every band width or finger shape.

What if the ring is adjustable?

You still need the maker’s fit range. See whether adjustable rings fit every finger.
