How to Pack Jewellery in a Suitcase Without Tangles

You open your travel pouch and find one knot made from three necklaces. The solution starts before the suitcase closes: give each piece its own space and keep loose chains from moving around.
Pack for the pieces you are taking
The aim is to limit movement, rubbing and crushing.
GIA’s care guidance recommends separating jewellery to help avoid scratches.
Your piece’s own instructions still come first.
Try a gentle movement check
Close the case and tilt it slowly. If the contents slide into one pile, add separate soft pouches or use a better-fitting case. Do not shake the case to test it; that creates the contact you are trying to avoid.
Check that the lid closes without pressing on tall settings or earring posts. A case that is too shallow can be less useful than a small box with enough room.
Should you thread a chain through a straw?
This common trick will not suit every necklace. A pendant, fixed ornament or wide clasp may not pass through, and a rough cut edge can catch the chain. Do not force jewellery through a narrow opening or take it apart to make a packing trick work.
A proper necklace compartment or separate soft pouch is a simpler choice when you are unsure. Keep a chain loosely arranged rather than wound tightly around something small.
Keep it away from leaks and pressure
Put toiletries in their own leak-resistant bag. Do not store jewellery beside a damp cloth or inside a bathroom pouch with perfume. Place the jewellery case where shoes, bottles and other heavy objects will not crush it.
Choose a secure place for valuable pieces and keep track of the case during the journey. Check your carrier’s and insurer’s rules if you are travelling with high-value items; packing advice is not a statement about cover or liability.
Make unpacking part of the routine
When you arrive, put the case on a clear surface away from sinks and bed edges. Keep the empty compartments ready so each piece has a place to return to at night.
If a necklace does become tangled, use the gentle untangling steps. Stop if the knot tightens or a link looks strained. A few minutes of separate packing is easier than trying to save a chain while rushing to get dressed.
