How to Store Earrings Without Losing One of the Pair

One earring is in the box. The other is somewhere between the dressing table, handbag and bathroom. A better system starts with the places where you actually take earrings off.
Set up two places, not ten
Use one safe temporary tray and one main storage spot. The temporary tray should be away from drains, table edges and small children. The main box should keep pairs separate enough that posts and settings do not catch.
Choose storage material appropriate for the finish. A display stand is useful only if dust and room conditions suit the pieces you keep on it.
Keep the back with the right earring
Do not assume every spare back fits every post securely. If a back feels too loose or too tight, check compatibility. A pair of beautiful earrings with unreliable backs is a loss waiting to happen.
When removing a pair, put both earrings and their backs down before doing another task. That small habit can prevent one half travelling to a different surface.
What should you do after wear?
Follow the maker's care method and let any approved cleaning dry before storage.
Do not put damp pieces straight into a closed box.
GIA's care guide supports protecting jewellery from contact and damage in storage; choose the setup for your actual materials.
Inspect posts, hinges and backs briefly. If a part is bent or loose, keep the pair aside for repair rather than returning it to the ready-to-wear section.
Travelling with earrings
Pack each pair in a small secure compartment or suitable pouch. Do not drop them loose into a large wash bag. Keep the travel case in a predictable place in your luggage and count the pairs before leaving a hotel.
For a short trip, taking fewer pairs makes the system easier. Use our jewellery packing guide for necklaces and rings too.
Already lost one?
Search the last removal point and the lining of the bag or case before buying a replacement. If only one remains, ask the seller whether a matching replacement is possible. Do not assume a later batch will be an exact colour or size match.
