How to Store Jewellery During the Monsoon

Rainy weather can turn a neat jewellery box into a place where damp pieces sit unnoticed. The aim is not a complicated storage system. It is to stop moisture, rubbing and tangles from building up together.
Set up one dry place
Choose a shelf or drawer away from the bathroom, a wet window ledge and places where rain or condensation reaches. A gift box looks lovely, but it is not automatically designed to control humidity.
For silver, the Canadian Conservation Institute explains that humidity can affect tarnish. That is not a reason to apply one storage recipe to every gemstone. Pearls and other sensitive materials need their own maker's advice.
Do not pack a damp piece away
After rain or a sweaty commute, check the care card. Clean or wipe only as approved and let the item dry. Pay attention to clasps and small gaps rather than only the visible front.
If the pouch itself feels damp, let it dry or replace it with suitable storage. A dry ring in a damp pouch is not a solved problem.
Do you need silica gel or an anti-tarnish strip?
Use storage products only when suitable for your jewellery and according to their instructions. Silica gel and anti-tarnish materials do different jobs; neither makes a sealed box maintenance free. Keep small packets away from children and pets.
Do not scatter loose granules onto jewellery. Do not assume an old packet still performs as it did when new. Follow the product's replacement or reactivation guidance if applicable.
Make a one-minute weekly check
Open the box. Look for dampness, a changed surface, a loose back or a clasp that has opened. You do not need to polish everything each week. Too much unnecessary cleaning can create wear of its own.
Keep care cards or a simple note of materials with pieces you do not wear often. “Gold colour” is not enough information when you need to choose a cleaning method months later.
If a silver piece has darkened, read why silver turns black. If you are leaving home for a trip, use the packing guide so good storage does not fall apart inside your suitcase.
